Science of Reading FAQ's

Do you provide the books?
The Diagnostic Center does not provide the books for the participants, however if the cost of the books is a burden you are still welcome to participate without purchasing the books. Another option would be to ask your district or school site to purchase these books for you as a professional development resource.

Do I have to buy the books to participate?
Please know that the course will be the most beneficial if you are able to do the assigned readings and have access to the books. We have designed the course to provide participants with the opportunity to engage in self-directed study of reading science and the books are an important component of this learning.

What if I can't make it to one of the sessions, will the sessions be recorded?
A recording link is sent out to all registered to participants regardless of attendance, usually within 24 - 48 hours of the live presentation. Recordings will remain available for a limited time during each reading academy cohort.

If I participate by watching the recording, can I still receive a participation certificate?
Yes. The process for receiving a participation certificate will be explained during the first session of the Science of Reading Academy.

Do you provide Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for completing the Science of Reading Academy?
Our course is offered as a free professional development opportunity for teachers and other participants. Although we strive to provide participants with high quality teaching and related resources, we are not able to provide continuing education units at this time.

I still have other questions. Who should I contact?
Please contact our Science of Reading Academy team leader, Paula Velez, with any additional questions you may have. She can be reached at: pvelez@dcc-cde.ca.gov.
